Collins Nwokolo’s transition into minimal stock-cube cooking was adopted after he had the privilege of watching
his grandmother enjoy a cube-free lifestyle whenever she cooked. In 2010, when she visited the family,
he noticed that she had a different way of cooking. She never used stock cubes and added very little salt.
As a health enthusiast himself, it peaked his curiosity.
It was later that would find out from her that she avoided stock cubes for a long time because of her health condition.
Gradually, his mother adopted her idea and soon, he too started practicing it little by little.
As a health writer and editor, he got to learn about the contents, and health effects of seasoning cubes.
Today when he cooks, he uses little to no seasoning cubes or powder.
You can find his classic article on this topic, as well as other broad topics on his blog, www.healthguide.ng

Almost 10 years ago, I had a dream. Prior to then, even from childhood, I had been fascinated with cooking. In this dream, some taught me a spice mix recipe which was strange for me as I have always cooked with seasoning cubes. That dream got me thinking and researching. Starting with the market women, then my mom, aunties, and every woman who could help, I asked as much questions as I could about natural spices. That was Spices 101 for me and I learned a lot.
Spice 201 was now experimentation stage, starting with the basic ginger and garlic, and my cooking aroma would fill the air everywhere. I also realized that even the basic curry I got from the market contained a mix of ginger, garlic, parsley, celery, onions and dried carrot. I continued to research as to how they mixed it all together. At first, I thought finding these spices would be hard, but on this journey, I realized that some of our bigger local markets stocked them, and wow! My joy knew no bounds. I experimented with various mixes at home and the first trial I had was with chicken. It was an instant win, both with me and my family and friends I shared it with
I now started to do my market research. Testing my mix with various people. I would also now learn about MSG and its dangers to our health. I even interviewed people who had been advised to cut out seasoning cubes completely because of the risk it posed to their health, and some had incredible success stories including a mom whose autistic daughter was healed as MSG cooking left her home. And that was it, I was done with cooking with seasoning cubes
I had my challenges introducing it to my family (my husband was the easiest though), but with more practice, every other family member and even visitors started to enjoy and appreciate our cube-less cooking at home
Launching my company Somre Spices, was the next natural thing to do, and I was led by the Holy Spirit to do that, going from free to people paying for it, and today, we can proudly say that from my natural spices to the various classes I teach, we have helped thousands of families, locally and internationally, transition to the cube-free life. The journey has truly been a rewarding one and it keeps getting better
