Everytime food is not ‘sweet’, what do we say?
Add more seasoning cubes.
The Ads screamed it, and your mother’s cooking (likely) validated it.
For meals to be tasty, we needed (more) stock cubes

But that’s a LIE!

Like my friend, Amaka Odunowo who has been cube-free for 4 years now said,

'I didn't understand why African food couldn't be cooked without stock cubes to taste nice. Who sold us the narrative? And why did we buy it?'
Before artificial stock cubes, natural herbs and spices were all we needed for healthy, yummy meals.
Eziaha
Stock cubes may have risen to popularity with the Baby-boomer generation.
Gen-X, Millennials and Gen-Z generations adopted it as the norm in cooking , but it stops with you!!!
Because of you, our children will inherit healthier, yummy cooking where stock cubes won’t even be invited to the party.
I am a big proponent of doing it together as a family so it was important carrying my entire family along because I knew that our taste-buds were all used to seasoning cubes and things would change, so I brought my boys and husband into the kitchen with me as I cooked and explained to them the new spices I was now replacing stock cubes with, and why this was important. We had to do it for health reasons and especially to reduce the risk of High blood pressure in my home.

The food tasted different, though not bad. My husband noticed it, and I found a wise way to explain to him. For health reasons, he got on board too (his words were ‘in the long run, this is healthier’). Now, he cooks 100% without cubes and adores spices. I do 10% or less cubes only in my meals. First, my story
How Eziaha went completely cube-free
You’ve probably seen me on:
‘Madam, I no dey see you again…’
Like you, I believed I needed stock-cubes to make yummy, tasty meals. Once the food was not ‘sweet’, I added more and more seasoning cubes and powders. I invested so much money in them, and I had a customer in the local market who would always tell me about the latest ones.

My variety of stock-cubes and powders occupied a twisted place of pride in my spice cabinet. Truth is, these cubes made me LAZY and uncreative in my cooking. Once a meal wasn’t ‘sweet’, I added more cubes and powders, and bam, taste-buds were happy.
All I could taste in my meals was the suspicious sweetness of Cubes, and it overpowered everything else. I stopped tasting the natural flavors of the foods God has blessed us with. As a Weight management and Healthy living Consultant, I knew there was something wrong every time I added more and more stock cubes.

Thankfully, my friend and one of our Board members Ezinne, had been preaching the cube-less cooking gospel for a while, so I got her on-board to train me and my Sisters in the 2nd half of 2020. It looked like a huge challenge, but I was willing to do it. I also joined my friend Idala’s 21-day cube-free class that year, and learned a lot.
L-R Idala, Eziaha and Ezinne
Plenty research, experiments, tears, wasted meals, over-spicing mistakes, frustrations, and more later, I finally cracked the hack to cooking completely cube-free and I have been doing that for almost 2 years now.

After holding on to those cubes and seasonings, just in case (LOL), I finally mustered the courage to toss them all out about 3months into my journey.

Stock-cubes and powders find no place in my kitchen, or my pots anymore.

And oh, about my customer. One day, she bumped into me in the market and said

‘Madam, I no dey see you again. You don’t buy from me anymore’

My answer?

Your guess is as good as mine, hehe.

Without a doubt, I can help you say ‘buh-bye Stock cubes’, and you can go minimal or completely cube-free. Just give it 3 months, tops!

Yes, stock cubes get a well-deserved bad rep in the healthy cooking world. After all, it contains

1. Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG), an artificial flavor enhancer which has been implicated in all kinds of short-term and long-term health issues, including cancer and other neurotoxic effects

2. Too much salt leading to fluid retention and hypertension

3. Hydrogenated oils aka Trans-fat, implicated in heart diseases like stroke and heart attacks as it clogs the arteries

Oh and sugar too. YES!
You really don't need stock cubes to have tasty meals. And if you must, then you can go minimal. Too much is dangerous in the short and long run…
Eziaha
But, there’s more we should worry about, especially as food is a part of life.

You deserve to taste and enjoy the natural, God-given flavors of food.

Stock cubes with its overbearing artificial flavor, completely robs you of that.

It’s like exchanging nutrients for sickness.
It started from pregnancy. I could not stand the taste of stock cubes in my food, so my husband had to start cooking for me without it as I couldn’t cook myself. After delivery, my taste buds had changed. Stock cubes in my meals made it taste funny. My buds preferred something more natural.

In the beginning, God (Elohim) created…Genesis 1 v 1

You’re a creative and intelligent child of Elohim, capable of coming up with the tastiest, healthiest meals for yourself, family and loved ones in your kitchen. Stock cubes rob you of exploring that creativity, joy, energy and fun as you cook, which research agrees is high quality leisure (cooking). Now all because of stock cubes, your cooking is less creative, and frankly boring. Plus, the health implications? No, you deserve better

I’m ready for healthy and yummy stock-free cooking, please.

Repeat after me: I am more creative with my natural spices in my kitchen, than anyone in an artificial lab producing stock cubes can ever get!

Like guitar gurus say, tone is in the finger. Beethoven played good music not because he had an expensive fancy piano, but because he knew how to work his fingers to produce the best sounds.

Likewise, creative Chefs like you make yummy meals, not because of any artificial cubes. Delicious cooking is a form of self-expression with simple manipulations that allow you express your natural creativity.

Stock cubes block your creative cooking process!

Take seasoning cubes away and see what brilliance you can come up with naturally.
And I’ll be your guide through the entire process to saying ‘buh-bye stock cubes’.
Did you know?
Heat used to cook, width of pot, right temperature and timing, portion of food prepared per time, surface area of natural ingredients, and freshness of spices are some of the important factors to note when you cook?

I will be sharing details on these and more during our LIVE cooking so your transition can be no harder than it needs to be.

WOW! I am ready to go minimal to cube-free.

Finally,

Your children and generations coming after us deserve better. There will be more battles to face in the world without you adding avoidable health battles to the mix. You have the power to draw a line in the sand and say ‘stock cubes ends with me now’.

Repeat: Before stock cubes, natural spices were. After me, stock cubes will no longer be a thing in my generation.

Collins Nwokolo

Collins Nwokolo’s transition into minimal stock-cube cooking was adopted after he had the privilege of watching his grandmother enjoy a cube-free lifestyle whenever she cooked. In 2010, when she visited the family, he noticed that she had a different way of cooking. She never used stock cubes and added very little salt.

As a health enthusiast himself, it peaked his curiosity.

It was later that would find out from her that she avoided stock cubes for a long time because of her health condition.

Gradually, his mother adopted her idea and soon, he too started practicing it little by little. As a health writer and editor, he got to learn about the contents, and health effects of seasoning cubes.

Today when he cooks, he uses little to no seasoning cubes or powder.

You can find his classic article on this topic, as well as other broad topics on his blog, www.healthguide.ng

Almost 10 years ago, I had a dream. Prior to then, even from childhood, I had been fascinated with cooking. In this dream, some taught me a spice mix recipe which was strange for me as I have always cooked with seasoning cubes. That dream got me thinking and researching. Starting with the market women, then my mom, aunties, and every woman who could help, I asked as much questions as I could about natural spices. That was Spices 101 for me and I learned a lot.

Spice 201 was now experimentation stage, starting with the basic ginger and garlic, and my cooking aroma would fill the air everywhere. I also realized that even the basic curry I got from the market contained a mix of ginger, garlic, parsley, celery, onions and dried carrot. I continued to research as to how they mixed it all together. At first, I thought finding these spices would be hard, but on this journey, I realized that some of our bigger local markets stocked them, and wow! My joy knew no bounds. I experimented with various mixes at home and the first trial I had was with chicken. It was an instant win, both with me and my family and friends I shared it with

I now started to do my market research. Testing my mix with various people. I would also now learn about MSG and its dangers to our health. I even interviewed people who had been advised to cut out seasoning cubes completely because of the risk it posed to their health, and some had incredible success stories including a mom whose autistic daughter was healed as MSG cooking left her home. And that was it, I was done with cooking with seasoning cubes

I had my challenges introducing it to my family (my husband was the easiest though), but with more practice, every other family member and even visitors started to enjoy and appreciate our cube-less cooking at home

Launching my company Somre Spices, was the next natural thing to do, and I was led by the Holy Spirit to do that, going from free to people paying for it, and today, we can proudly say that from my natural spices to the various classes I teach, we have helped thousands of families, locally and internationally, transition to the cube-free life. The journey has truly been a rewarding one and it keeps getting better

My Cube-free journey

It started from pregnancy. I could not stand the taste of stock cubes in my food, so my husband had to start cooking for me without it as I couldn’t cook myself.

After delivery, my taste buds had changed. Stock cubes in my meals made it taste funny. My buds preferred something more natural. My hubby couldn’t really stand it, so that led me to experimentation (I joined Idala’s 21-day Stock cube-free challenge which Eziaha shared about) and various purchases (Eziaha shared her natural spices lists with me which I purchased. Thanks to all that, now, I have my standard bases I use in all my meals. And yes, my husband and children now enjoy my cube-less meals.

My Cube-free journey

It started with me joining Idala’s 21-day Stock cube-free challenge which Eziaha shared about on her status. That laid the right foundation for me even though I was not serious then. A few months later, I joined another Telegram group of women on the cube-free journey and that provided both the information and motivation I needed. I kept on trying and experimenting and from January 2021, I became completely cube-free.

My cube-free journey

I started hearing about cooking cube-free from Lagos housewife. I thought it was interesting but never considered it. Then Eziaha started to talk about it. I joined Idala’s 21-day Stock cube-free challenge in October 2020 which Eziaha shared about and there began my journey. I also joined the cube-less cooking challenge with Ezinne of Somre foods when I heard Eziaha tell us about it, and it was so helpful to my journey. Eziaha took one of the virtual classes Ezinne had and I learned even more from her personal journey.

Now, ALL my meals are Stock cube-free and nobody ever notices. Stock-cubes are not missed at all in my home. My egusi soup especially has the best reviews.

If I could give my kids a better, healthier cooking and eating experience, I wanted that.

My cube-free journey

It started with wanting to feed my kids healthier and I knew that stock cubes were dangerous, especially how we were raised with it. If I could give my kids a better, healthier cooking and eating experience, I wanted that. So I started following blogs and pages on Instagram that supported my cause. I started slowly so my taste buds could adjust, and experimented with various natural spices, until I found what works for me and my family. Now, I use a cube or less only for soups and stews once a week or once in two weeks so we are definitely a stock-cube minimal happy and healthy home

We all grew up using stock cubes at home so transitioning has to carry everyone in the family along, both in practice and in education.

Interestingly, the whole stock-cube free journey started unknowingly from my husband. At the time, we used to eat Noodles at home (now, we don’t anymore, Praise God hehe) and instead of using the seasoning in the pack (which is very similar to what is contained in stock cubes), we would use salt and any other seasoning we had at home.
Then we started to transition the cube-free life into our soups and the stews, replacing it with local spices and all. Even my maids had to adjust and it was a big transition for everyone.
I just kept encouraging everyone to keep trying independently and even the mistakes and disasters, we owned it as a team. I made it clear to everyone that this was the only way forward At first, I fell for the pressure to use many many ingredients as I thought I needed super powers to combat the almighty stock cubes lol. As time went on, I continued to research and make adjustments to less.
I am a big proponent of doing it together as a family so it was important carrying my entire family along because I knew that our taste-buds were all used to seasoning cubes and things would change. Because I was not the only one championing the cause, that made such a difference. Going cube-free is not a solo decision that the woman/wife can just make. We all grew up using stock cubes at home so transitioning has to carry everyone in the family along, both in practice and in education.

I have become a collector of natural spices and an avid reader of labels so I'm sure I am not getting MSG (contained in seasoning cubes) in disguise

We had a training for wives organised by Eziaha and one of the Queens- a crusader for no stock cube cooking, Ezinne of Somre foods gave a one hour training on cooking without stock cubes. This got me hooked.

I loved the health benefits of using natural spices so when this Queen started an online class I joined. I have become a collector of natural spices and an avid reader of labels so I'm sure I am not getting MSG (contained in seasoning cubes) in disguise

I further learned that the effects of seasoning cubes may not be obvious in the present, but may (most likely) show up in the future, causing all kinds of health challenges.

My stock cube-free journey began in 2020 as a Coaching Client of Eziaha. I had suffered a miscarriage that year, and after that, I wanted to become healthier and so joined CoachE’s class

I heard her talk about the dangers of Stock-cubes and also did some research which buttressed her claims. I further learned that the effects of seasoning cubes may not be obvious in the present, but may (most likely) show up in the future, causing all kinds of health challenges. I wanted better for my daughter and family as a whole, so I jumped on board the cube-free train. It was hard at first for my husband and I as our taste-buds protested, but I continued to improvise and experiment with natural ingredients and spices, till our taste-buds adjusted.

I was also heavily inspired by the success stories of other women who had eliminated stock-cubes from their kitchen, especially Eziaha, and that really encouraged me on this journey that is now almost 2years strong

My Cube-free journey

I first heard about ‘cube-free’ from Eziaha as my Coach and friend. Honestly, I had my doubts. We all know Eziaha’s own is too much so I didn’t quite get on board. Months later, she had a collaboration with Ezinne, Queen of Spices and CEO of Somre Foods, a natural spices company. I joined Ezinne’s cube-less cooking classes online, and I saw that this thing was possible. I implemented what I learned from her, and started substituting with her spices, cutting off cubes by about 90%. The food tasted different, though not bad. My husband noticed it, and I found a wise way to explain to him. For health reasons, he got on board too (his words were ‘in the long run, this is healthier’). Now, he cooks 100% without cubes and adores Somre spices. I do 10% or less cubes only in my meals. You can even call me an Influencer. Why? Because I have now successfully converted one of my Doctor friends who loves cooking and she does wonders in her meals without stock cubes now, including cooking for her child’s birthday party that had many guests with just two stock cubes, one for the Jollof rice and the second cube for the fried rice, and all the Guests ate, cleaned their plates and noticed nothing.

It was hard though!!! And I went on and off for a while. But the Holy Spirit helped me a lot and I kept an open mind.

I had been praying, and I heard the Lord talk to me about my Diet, so I knew I had to do something about it.
Prior to this time, my friend Maureen had suggested an IG page to me to follow, that is
@LagosHousewife, who talks about healthy eating a lot! But I found it really absurd; how can anybody cook without seasoning cubes?

Now one of the ways I know God is talking to me is that, I see that information everywhere, so in my prayers, He said it, in my emails I saw it, online I saw it. Then Maureen told me she'd been off seasoning cubes for two years!
Mehn, I jumped on board!

It was hard though!!! And I went on and off for a while. But the Holy Spirit helped me a lot and I kept an open mind. Today, as I continue to learn and experiment, 15months later, I am proudly cube-free and loving it.

As I practiced, I started to enjoy the fun in experimenting with various spice mixes, and I even share videos of my experiments with my online community.

I started to explore cooking cube-free when I wanted to take my Nigerian Jollof to my vegan colleagues at work as the cubes were ‘flavoured’ with chicken, crayfish, etx, all not suitable for vegans. This led me to researching about how I could cook tasty Naija meals without stock cubes. I also started to hang out with people from different backgrounds, likes and culture like my super-healthy cousin and former Asian housemate who cooked yummy meals with various natural spices I had never seen or heard about before, and without any stock cubes.

I would later learn that this was possible; I could actually cook healthy, yummy meals cube-free including jollof rice. Then I saw a flier on Eziaha’s status for cube-less cooking with Ezinne which I joined and found so helpful as Eziaha, Ezinne and others shared their journey with us.
